When should an au pair’s Dutch health insurance policy start, and are there circumstances where a different start date applies?
In the Netherlands, au pairs are required to have basic health insurance (Basisverzekering) from the day they become residents. The official start date of the health insurance policy is typically the date of registration in the Personal Records Database (BRP) at the municipality. Even if the insurance application is completed after this date, coverage is retroactively applied to the BRP registration date, and premiums are due from that time. This can mean that you could receive a large health insurance bill when you first apply, if you waited until almost four months are over before applying.
