Departure Tasks for Au Pairs in the Netherlands

What must the au pair do before leaving the Netherlands?

To ensure a smooth departure, the au pair must complete the following tasks:

  • Deregister at City Hall:
    • The au pair must deregister at the municipality (BRP/GBA) within 5 working days before departure.
    • The au pair needs to go to the municipality personally. Procedures vary by city, so it is recommended to call the local municipality office to confirm the process.
    • Links for Deregistration:
      • Amsterdam: Deregister from Amsterdam
      • Rotterdam: Deregister from Rotterdam
      • The Hague: Deregister from The Hague
      • Utrecht: Deregister in Utrecht
  • Send Proof of Deregistration:
    • The au pair must send a copy of their deregistration proof to the agency. This is necessary for final documentation.
  • Send Copies of Ticket and Visa:
    • The au pair must send the agency a copy of their return flight ticket.
    • If transferring to another country instead of returning home, the au pair must also provide a copy of their visa for the next destination.
  • Cancel Dutch Health Insurance:
    • Health insurance cancellation often requires proof of deregistration. Visit the insurance provider’s website for instructions specific to your policy.

    • Cancel essential subscriptions like your transportation card (OV-chipkaart), museum card, or gym membership.

  • Return the Residence Permit Card:
    • Before departure, the au pair must return their residence permit card either to the IND office or the agency by post.
    • Keep a copy of both the front and back of the card for your records.
