A Dutch bank account is required for: 

  • Receiving healthcare allowances. (zorgtoeslag) 
  • Paying Dutch health insurance premiums. 
  • Receiving pocket money. 
  • Paying for transport in The Netherlands and other purchases without international transaction fees. 
  • Paying deposits to join Sunshine events or Culture online bus trips (uses iDeal).  
  • The Netherlands is generally a cashless society, so a bank card makes life much easier.
