How Can We Help?
Departure Tasks for Au Pairs in the Netherlands
What must the au pair do before leaving the Netherlands?
To ensure a smooth departure, the au pair must complete the following tasks:
- Deregister at City Hall:
- The au pair must deregister at the municipality (BRP/GBA) within 5 working days before departure.
- The au pair needs to go to the municipality personally. Procedures vary by city, so it is recommended to call the local municipality office to confirm the process.
- Links for Deregistration:
- Amsterdam: Deregister from Amsterdam
- Rotterdam: Deregister from Rotterdam
- The Hague: Deregister from The Hague
- Utrecht: Deregister in Utrecht
- Send Proof of Deregistration:
- The au pair must send a copy of their deregistration proof to the agency. This is necessary for final documentation.
- Send Copies of Ticket and Visa:
- The au pair must send the agency a copy of their return flight ticket.
- If transferring to another country instead of returning home, the au pair must also provide a copy of their visa for the next destination.
- Cancel Dutch Health Insurance:
- Health insurance cancellation often requires proof of deregistration. Visit the insurance provider’s website for instructions specific to your policy.
- Cancel Healthcare Allowance:
- Use your DigiD account to cancel the healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag).
- Steps:
- Log in to the DigiD portal.
- Select “Zorgtoeslag Stopzetten” from the menu.
- Use the same cancellation date as your health insurance cancellation.
- Select “moving abroad” as the reason.
- DigiD Portal: Log in to DigiD
- Cancel Mobile Subscription:
- If you have a postpaid subscription, you may keep it for a month after returning home for managing one-time pins or cancellations. Afterward, cancel it via your provider’s website.
- Cancel Other Subscriptions and Cards:
- Cancel essential subscriptions like your transportation card (OV-chipkaart), museum card, or gym membership.
- Bank accounts should be closed a month after leaving to ensure any remaining payments, such as tax or allowances, are completed.
- Return the Residence Permit Card:
- Before departure, the au pair must return their residence permit card either to the IND office or the agency by post.
- Keep a copy of both the front and back of the card for your records.
- Agency will notify the IND:
- Sunshine will submit the departure notification form to the IND to confirm your exit from the Netherlands.
